Publishing Administration & Copyright Registration

Exploiting songwriting copyrights has become extremely important now that record sales are decreasing year after year. SoundPlan works with you to administer these copyrights and to ensure that they are registered with the proper performance rights and licensing organizations so that you do not miss out on any revenue that you are entitled to. This includes:

  • SOCAN registration. SOCAN distributes royalties from the public performance of your songs on radio, television, film, and from your live performances. As a songwriter or publisher, if you do not register with SOCAN, than you will not receive these royalties. SOCAN also administers funds from the Private Copying Levy that is available to songwriters and publishers as well.
  • CMRRA mechanical licenses. CMRRA issues licenses for the reproduction of musical works and distributes royalties from the license fees to publishers.
  • Synchronization licenses. These are licenses granted by publishers (or songwriters in rare cases) for the placement of music on film and television. The fees from these licenses are negotiated on a case by case basis with film and television producers.
  • Copyright Office (Canada) and Library of Congress (US Copyright Office) registration. Registering your songs with these government organizations is important in establishing ownership of the songs and protecting them from copyright infringement.
